I currently offer all pieces in four different glaze shades, which you can discover below. Each is inspired by the beautiful surroundings of where Bennylou pottery is made, in Kingston, Otago.

Wakatipu (blue) glaze
This glaze takes inspiration from the beautiful waters of Lake Wakatipu / Whakatipu wai-māori upon whose shores Kingston sits. I feel it has a uniquely dark appearance which, for me, sets it apart from nearby lakes and waterways. The navy hue indicates its incredible depth (at 420m, it's amongst New Zealand's deepest lakes) and seems to both reflect light and absorb it. I find it both beautiful and hypnotising, and this glaze is an ode to the beauty of my home lake.

Lavender (purple) glaze
This glaze takes inspiration from the long-stemmed French lavender which grows in abundance at my home in Kingston. I always loved the lavender which grew in this part of the country at my grandparents' house as a kid (never seen in the wetter northern climate I grew up in) which was strung up from the garage rafters and stitched into material for clothing draws. Textured, soft and pretty, this glaze is a love letter to my favourite flower.

Merino (white) glaze
This glaze takes inspiration from the high country farms which surround Kingston, and the flocks of merino sheep which graze their tussocked hillsides. Of all my glazes, it's the one which is still a work in progress, as I continue to strive to find the exact shade of creamy white I see in my mind's eye. In the meantime, this is an ode to the high country beauty which I feel so fortunate to live in, and the way of life so special to this part of the world.

Eyre (green) glaze
This glaze takes inspiration from the wall of green I live beneath - the regenerating native bush of the Eyre mountains. Living down the older end of town, this wall of native bush is on my doorstep and a constant in my vision. The glaze is an attempt to capture its dynamic nature, with textures of blue and yellow both making an appearance, and lighter shade mimicking the mist which over sits amongst the trees in the mornings.
