THE PERSON (+ PETS)
I'm Rachel - the human behind the pottery - but I can't introduce Bennylou Ceramics without also introducing the two pets who gave this endeavour its name.
Both adopted from SPCA, Benny is the dog and Lottie, affectionately known as Lottie Lou, is the tortoiseshell. Both are ever-present here, with Benny always lying at my feet when on the wheel, and Lottie always nosing around - she considers herself Chief Inspector of all goods that leave the studio. So when you buy from Bennylou, just know your piece has gone past the harshest critic.
As for me, I started this endeavour in early 2022 after attending a class and becoming hooked. Still very much a beginner, I have lots to learn, but am loving the process, and the rewards of making pieces for others.
THE POTTERY
When it comes to the pieces I make, I let one pretty simple factor dictate the results: is it something I myself would want to buy? Iam currently in a phase of change when it comes to both the glaze colours and clay bodies I use, but you can get a taste for the different styles I offer over at my Instagram account.
I make primarily tumblers, mugs, and bowls. I am always trying out new forms and styles, so if there is something you have in mind, please get in touch!

THE PLACE
Bennylou Ceramics is based in Kingston, a small town at the southern end of Lake Wakatipu, half an hour's drive from Queenstown airport.
Nestled between the Eyre mountain range to the west and the Hector range / Tāpuae O'Uenuku to the east, I am lucky enough to enjoy views of the latter from my "studio" (ahem, garage). Particularly stunning in evening light during long days of summer - pictured.
Sandflies aside, it's a pretty magical spot, and one that makes it hard not to be inspired to try and create something beautiful! I've done my best.
